The BSB40520 – Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is an Australian vocational qualification designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to effectively lead and manage teams in a business environment.

This qualification is aimed at individuals who are aspiring to move into leadership roles or who are currently in such positions and wish to enhance their leadership and management skills. The course covers essential aspects of leadership, team management, operational planning, and workplace communication.

  • This course consists of 12 units of competency, 5 Core units and 7 elective units of competency.
  • Students must successfully complete all units to gain their qualification.
  • Training delivery consists of formal structured training and assessment of the practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired through the structure training over the duration of the training program.
  • Leadership Skills: Developing leadership qualities, leading by example, and inspiring and motivating team members.
  • Team Management: Effective team management strategies, including team dynamics, conflict resolution, and performance management.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead effective workplace relationships. It applies to individuals who need to develop and manage relationships with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders to achieve work goals.
BSBOPS402:Coordinate business operational plans
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate business operational plans. It applies to individuals who are responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring operational plans to ensure that business objectives are met efficiently and effectively.
BSBXCM401:Apply communication strategies in the workplace
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply communication strategies in the workplace. It applies to individuals who need to develop communication plans, engage in effective communication, and use communication strategies to meet the needs of the organization.
BSBLDR 411 Demonstrate leadership in the workplace
BSBLDR411: Demonstrate Leadership in the Workplace equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to effectively exhibit leadership qualities and guide teams to achieve organizational goals.

It covers work allocation and the methods to review performance, reward excellence and provide feedback. The unit makes the link between performance management and performance development and reinforces both functions as a key requirement for effective managers.
BSBPEF402:Develop personal work priorities
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop personal work priorities and professional development. It applies to individuals who need to manage their own work priorities, set personal goals, and plan for professional growth.
BSBPEF501:Manage personal and professional development
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement systems and process that support the personal and professional development of self and others. The unit applies to individuals working in a range of managerial positions who are accountable for the development and performance of others.
BSBTWK401:Build and maintain business relationships
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish, develop and maintain effective work relationships and networks through relationship building and negotiation skills required by workers. These workers may be within an organisation as well as freelance or contract workers.The unit applies to individuals with a broad knowledge of networking and negotiation who contribute to creating solutions to unpredictable problems. They may have responsibility for and provide guidance to others.
BSBWHS411:Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures, and programs. It applies to individuals who play a role in ensuring that WHS laws are adhered to in their work area.
BSBXTW401: Lead and facilitate a team
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to effectively lead and facilitate a team in a workplace within any industry. This unit has a specific focus on the teamwork skills required for team leader or supervisor level (depending on organisational structure) workers with responsibility for others or teams.

The assessment methods for this qualification typically include a combination of:

  • Duration: 1 year.
  • Delivery: Can be completed through classroom-based learning, online learning, workplace training, or a combination of these methods.

After completing the Certificate IV, students may choose to further their studies with higher-level qualifications such as:

  • BSB50120 – Diploma of Business
  • BSB60120 – Advanced Diploma of Business
  • Bachelor of Business or related degrees

  • There are generally no formal prerequisites for this course, but some experience in a business environment or previous study in a related area may be beneficial.

  • Basic literacy, numeracy, and computer skills are expected.

  • some cases may need a pre-enrollment assessment to ensure the course is suitable for the prospective student.
