CHC43121 - Certificate IV in Disability Support

Certificate IV in Disability Support is an Australian vocational qualification designed to prepare students for advanced roles in the disability support sector. Here’s an overview of the course

This qualification aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver specialized support services to individuals with disabilities. It is suitable for those who have completed a Certificate III in Individual Support or have equivalent experience and wish to advance their career in disability support.

  • Advanced Support Skills: Developing advanced skills to support people with disabilities in achieving greater independence, self-reliance, and social participation.
  • Individualized Plans: Creating and implementing individualized support plans tailored to the unique needs and goals of clients.
  • Empowerment: Facilitating the empowerment and advocacy of people with disabilities.
  • Complex Needs: Supporting individuals with complex needs, including those with dual diagnoses (mental health and disability).
  • Community Participation: Encouraging and facilitating community participation and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
  • Behavior Support: Implementing positive behavior support strategies to manage challenging behaviors.

CHCCCS044:Follow established person-centred behaviour supports
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support and engage people to use positive person-centred behaviour supports. It involves following and contributing to the establishment of behaviour support plans.
CHCDIS017:Facilitate community participation and social inclusion
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assist people with disabilities to participate in the community, social and civic activities. It includes identifying opportunities for participation and providing the required support.
CHCDIS018:Facilitate ongoing skills development using a person-centred approach
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support ongoing skills development for people with disabilities, using a person-centred approach.
CHCDIS019:Provide person-centred services to people with disability with complex needs
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred services to people with disability with complex needs.
CHCLEG003:Manage legal and ethical compliance
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage legal and ethical compliance within an organisation or work area.
CHCMHS001:Work with people with mental health issues
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work in a recovery-oriented way to effectively and respectfully support people with mental health issues.
HLTWHS003:Maintain work health and safety
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs to meet legislative requirements.
CHCCCS 044 Follow established person-centred behaviour supports
Implement personalized behavior support strategies in accordance with individual needs and preferences to promote a person-centered approach in care provision. Adhere to established guidelines and practices to ensure the well-being and dignity of individuals through tailored behavior support plans.

CHCDIS020:Work effectively in disability support
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a disability support work context. The unit covers meeting job requirements, complying with organisational requirements and working in a disability sector context.
CHCDIV002: Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
The unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety issues in the workplace, model cultural safety in own work practice, and develop strategies to enhance cultural safety.
CHCDIV003:Manage and promote diversity
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and promote diversity in the workplace, and to contribute to the planning of diversity policies and procedures. This may apply to internal work practices or external service delivery.

The assessment methods for this qualification typically include a combination of:

  • Written assignments
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Observations in the workplace
  • Case studies
  • Portfolios of evidence

For face to face classes (not including RPL)

  • Disposal tools free from IAMA
  • Field trips may incur a cost to the Learner. (going to library or business places)
  • Disposal Tools (Notebooks and pens)
  • Laptop supported from IAMA for practice and research in campus only.
  • MUST have completed CHC33021 – Certificate III in Individual Support.
  • Some providers may require a Working with Children Check or a similar background check due to the nature of the work.
Graduates of this course can pursue various advanced roles in the disability support sector, including:
  • Disability Support Worker (advanced level)

  • Senior Personal Care Assistant

  • Community Development Worker

  • Disability Team Leader

  • Disability Services Coordinator

  • Case Manager in disability services
