CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry, often referred to as the “White Card” course, is an essential qualification for individuals looking to work in the construction industry in Australia.

This unit of competency provides participants with the fundamental occupational health and safety knowledge required prior to commencing work on a construction site. The successful completion of this course is mandatory for anyone entering the construction industry to ensure they understand how to identify and manage hazards and risks.

  • Work Health and Safety (WHS) Legislation: Understanding the basic principles of WHS laws and regulations applicable to the construction industry.
  • Construction Hazards: Identifying common construction site hazards, including manual handling, working at heights, and exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Risk Management: Learning methods to assess and control risks associated with construction work.
  • Safety Equipment and PPE: Proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.
  • Emergency Procedures: Knowing what to do in case of an emergency, including evacuation procedures and first aid.
  • Communication and Reporting: Understanding the importance of communication and reporting safety issues on construction sites.

  • Delivery: It can be completed through face-to-face classroom sessions or online training, depending on the training provider.

After completing this unit, individuals can pursue further training and qualifications in the construction industry, such as:

  • Certificate III in Carpentry
  • Certificate III in Concreting
  • Certificate III in Plumbing
  • Certificate III in Civil Construction

For face to face classes (not including RPL)

  • Disposal tools free from IAMA
  • Field trips may incur a cost to the Learner. (going to library or business places)
  • Disposal Tools (notebooks and pens)
  • Laptop supported from IAMA for practice and research
  • Generally, there are no formal prerequisites for this course, but a basic level of literacy and numeracy is expected.

  • Some providers may require a National Police Check or similar background check due to the nature of the work.
