CHC52021 - Diploma of Community Services

Diploma of Community Services is an Australian vocational qualification designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to work in various roles within the community services sector.

This qualification aims to prepare students for roles that involve the design, delivery, and management of person-centred services to individuals, groups, and communities. It is suitable for those who wish to take on leadership and managerial roles in community services settings or who want to develop specialized skills in areas such as case management, community development, and support work.

  • Case Management: Advanced skills in case management, including assessment, planning, implementation, and review of client services.
  • Community Development: Strategies for engaging and supporting communities, including community development theories and practices.
  • Counselling and Support: Techniques for providing effective counselling and support to clients with diverse needs.
  • Leadership and Management: Skills in leading and managing teams, including supervision, mentoring, and staff development.
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: Understanding and applying legal and ethical standards in community services work.
  • Advocacy and Social Change: Promoting social change and advocating for clients’ rights and needs.
  • Health and Wellbeing: Supporting clients’ physical, mental, and emotional health and wellbeing.
Packaging for each specialisation:
  • at least 4 Group A electives must be selected for the award of Diploma of Community Services(Case Management)
  • at least 3 Group B electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Social Housing)
  • at least 3 Group C electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Child, Youth and Family Welfare)
  • at least 3 Group D electives must be selected for award of the Diploma of Community Services (Responding to Family Violence).
  • Where two or more specialisations are completed, this should be noted on the testamur when awarding the qualification. For example, Diploma of Community Services (Case Management, Social Housing and Child, Youth and Family Welfare).

CHCCCS004 – Assess co-existing needs
This unit covers the skills required to assess clients with co-existing needs, identify the range of issues affecting them, and determine appropriate service responses.
CHCCCS007 – Develop and implement service programs
This unit focuses on the development and implementation of service programs to meet the needs of individuals and communities, ensuring they are effective and responsive.
CHCCCS019 – Recognise and respond to crisis situations
This unit provides skills to recognize and respond effectively to crisis situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals involved.
CHCCSM013 – Facilitate and review case management
This unit covers facilitating and reviewing case management processes to support clients, ensuring their needs are met and services are coordinated efficiently.
CHCDEV005 – Analyse impacts of sociological factors on people in community work and services
This unit explores the analysis of sociological factors and their impact on individuals and communities, informing community work and services to better address these influences.
CHCDFV001 – Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence
This unit focuses on recognizing and responding to domestic and family violence, ensuring appropriate support and interventions are provided.
CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
This unit covers the skills needed to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups, promoting inclusivity and understanding in various settings.
CHCDIV002 – Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
This unit emphasizes promoting cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, ensuring respectful and supportive practices in service delivery.
CHCLEG003 – Manage legal and ethical compliance
This unit provides knowledge and skills to manage legal and ethical compliance in the workplace, ensuring adherence to relevant laws and regulations.
CHCMGT005 – Facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes
This unit covers facilitating debriefing and support processes in the workplace, promoting mental health and well-being among staff.
CHCPRP003 – Reflect on and improve own professional practice
This unit focuses on self-reflection and continuous improvement of professional practice, enhancing the quality of service delivery.
HLTWHS003 – Maintain work health and safety
This unit provides the skills and knowledge to maintain health and safety in the workplace, ensuring a safe environment for all employees and clients.

CHCCCS033:Identify and report abuse
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify signs of abuse, including suspected abuse or allegations of abuse, take appropriate action according to role and responsibilities and minimise the risk of abuse to a person.
CHCCCS038:Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support, and to deliver rights-based services using a person-centred approach. It should be carried out in conjunction with individualised plans. This unit applies to workers in varied care and support contexts.
CHCDIS017: Facilitate community participation and social inclusion
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and facilitate person-centred strategies for participation in various community settings, functions and activities to enhance the psychosocial wellbeing and lifestyle of a person with disability. This unit applies to workers in varied disability contexts. Work performed requires a range of well developed, person-centred skills where some discretion and judgement is required and workers will take responsibility for their own outputs.
CHCDIS019:Provide person-centred services to people with disability with complex needs
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred services to people with disability with complex or special support needs under the supervision of a relevant professional. This unit applies to workers in varied disability contexts. Work performed requires a range of well developed, person-centred skills where some discretion and judgement is required and workers will take responsibility for their own outputs.
CHCDIV003:Manage and promote diversity
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and promote diversity in the workplace, and to contribute to the planning of diversity policies and procedures. This may apply to internal work practices or external service delivery.
CHCPRP001:Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify networking and collaboration needs and develop formal and informal partnerships to enhance service delivery and improve professional practice. This unit applies to work in all industry sectors, and to individuals who take pro-active responsibility for improving collaboration between workers and organisations.
CHCMHS001 – Work with people with mental health issues
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to work collaboratively with individuals experiencing mental health issues. It focuses on promoting recovery, resilience, and overall well-being, ensuring support is provided in a respectful and empathetic manner.
CHCPRT025 – Identify and report children and young people at risk
This unit focuses on identifying and reporting children and young people at risk of harm. It emphasizes recognizing signs of abuse or neglect and understanding the legal and ethical responsibilities involved in reporting these concerns to the appropriate authorities.

The assessment methods for this qualification typically include a combination of:

  • Written assignments
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Observations in the workplace
  • Case studies
  • Portfolios of evidence

For face to face classes (not including RPL)

  • Disposal tools free from IAMA
  • Field trips may incur a cost to the Learner. (going to library or business places)
  • Disposal Tools (notebooks and pens)
  • Laptop supported from IAMA for practice and research
  • There are no formal entry requirements for the CHC52021 – Diploma of Community Services, but basic literacy, numeracy, communication skills, and relevant background checks are recommended.
  • Some providers may require a National Police Check or similar background check due to the nature of the work.
