HLTAID014 - Provide Advanced First Aid
The HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid course is an Australian vocational qualification designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to respond to and manage complex first aid situations.
This course is designed to provide participants with the ability to manage, provide, and coordinate advanced first aid responses, including incidents that require complex patient care until the arrival of medical or other assistance. It is suitable for those who are required to provide, coordinate, and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings.
- Advanced First Aid Techniques: Skills for managing a range of advanced first aid situations, including complex emergencies.
- CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Advanced CPR techniques, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Trauma Management: Techniques for managing trauma, such as fractures, spinal injuries, and severe bleeding.
- Medical Emergencies: Responding to medical conditions like heart attack, stroke, asthma, and diabetes.
- Advanced Resuscitation: Including the use of oxygen and airway management devices.
- Coordination of Emergency Situations: Skills for coordinating and managing emergency situations and communicating effectively with emergency services.
- Legal and Ethical Considerations: Understanding the legal and ethical responsibilities of providing advanced first aid.
Some of the core topics covered in this qualification are:
- Advanced Patient Assessment: Conducting thorough patient assessments to determine the nature and extent of injuries or illnesses.
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques: Using advanced resuscitation equipment and techniques.
- Administering Medications: Safe administration of medications such as asthma inhalers, adrenaline auto-injectors, and oxygen therapy.
- Managing Major Incidents: Responding to large-scale incidents, including multi-casualty situations.
- Workplace First Aid: Managing workplace first aid kits and resources, and developing first aid policies and procedures.
- Emergency Action Plans: Creating and implementing emergency action plans for various scenarios.
Elective units may vary depending on the provider, but often include topics such as:
- CHCCCS014 – Provide brief interventions
- CHCCOM003 – Develop workplace communication strategies
- CHCCSL001 – Establish and confirm the counselling relationship
- CHCCSM002 – Implement case management practice
- CHCCSM005 – Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management
- CHCMHS001 – Work with people with mental health issues
The assessment methods for this course typically include a combination of:
- Written assignments and exams
- Practical demonstrations of advanced first aid techniques
- Scenario-based assessments
- Observations in simulated environments
- Duration: The course duration varies but typically ranges from 2 to 3 days, depending on the mode of delivery and prior knowledge of participants.
- Delivery: Can be completed through face-to-face classroom sessions, practical hands-on training, and online components, depending on the training provider.
After completing this advanced first aid unit, participants may choose to further their training with more specialized qualifications such as:
- HLTAID015 – Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
- HLTSS00027 – Occupational First Aid Skill Set
- Other health and emergency response qualifications
This qualification provides essential skills for those required to manage advanced first aid situations and ensures that participants can effectively respond to and manage a range of complex emergencies, enhancing the safety and well-being of individuals in various settings.
For face to face classes (not including RPL)
- Disposal tools free from IAMA
- Field trips may incur a cost to the Learner. (going to library or business places)
- Disposal Tools (notebooks and pens)
- Laptop supported from IAMA for practice and research in campus only.
- Basic understanding of first aid principles (typically a current HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid certificate is required).
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Completion of this unit enables participants to provide advanced first aid in a variety of settings, including:
- Workplace first aid officer
- Community first responder
- Event first aid officer
- Advanced first aid roles in sports clubs, schools, and community organizations
